How Compassion Makes Teams Stronger
Twelve minutes on why communication skills stop working exactly when a team needs them most, and what has to be there instead. Recorded at TEDxUniversityofGroningen in February 2022.
The talk
In February 2022, at TEDxUniversityofGroningen, Imre told an audience about the moment his communication skills failed him completely. That confession turned into this talk.
What it is about
Most of us learn communication as a set of techniques. Listen actively. Use I-statements. Reflect back what you heard. All of it works, right up to the moment it matters most, and then it doesn't.
The talk explores why. When a team is under real pressure, people can feel the difference between a technique aimed at them and a person actually turning towards them. The skill is the same either way. The intention behind it is not.
"When the going gets tough in teams, you don't need more skills, techniques or tricks. You need an intention of compassion."
The other half of the talk is about common humanity: the recognition that the person across the table is struggling with roughly the same things you are. The strongest teams are not the ones that avoid conflict. They are the ones that can walk into it and come out still connected.
Where the ideas go next
If the talk landed, the written version of the same argument is in what is compassionate leadership, and the evidence sits in the research. The part about techniques failing under pressure is what our advanced communication training is built on.
And if you want this talk on your own stage, we give keynotes and masterclasses worldwide.
